Transcription and most cuts run on-device. For some whole-video instructions you can optionally use Apple Private Cloud Compute — transcript text only, never your video file, never a third-party AI API. Off by default in Settings → Privacy.
First transcription may download Apple speech models. License activation uses Lemon Squeezy. Passcut is not fully offline.
PrivacyCloud editors upload your talking-head and burn GPU time on someone else’s rack. Passcut transcribes, cuts, captions, and exports on Apple Silicon you already plugged in. The installer is a few megabytes of native Swift — not a browser wrapped around a farm. Reduce noise and Enhance voice process the span on the timeline, not the unused original file.
Why this uses less cloudDrop files from Finder, or record the screen. Passcut indexes media locally in a .passcut project bundle.
Pick the language spoken in the clip. On-device SpeechAnalyzer builds a transcript. Use Clean up, Remove silence, Make concise, or Main story — then Accept the cut.
Render MP4 on your Mac. Add captions on any plan. Pro exports FCPXML or EDL for Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Premiere Pro.

A rough cut is the initial assembly phase of video editing where raw camera takes are logged, trimmed, and ordered into a structured narrative timeline prior to color grading, audio mixing, and visual effects.
